About us
Supporting local people to connect, create, and shape the future of Sea Mills
Sea Mills Community Initiatives is a community-led organisation working to strengthen connection, well being, and opportunity in the Sea Mills area of Bristol. We support residents to develop ideas, activities, and projects that bring people together and respond to what the community needs most.
Our work focuses on creating welcoming spaces where people can meet, share ideas, and take part in shaping their community. Each year we work alongside more than 70 local volunteers who help run activities, support events, and welcome people into our spaces. Through regular groups, creative programmes, and community activities, we help build confidence, reduce isolation, and create opportunities for people to get involved locally.
Our community spaces are used by more than 25 local groups who meet regularly for activities, support networks, and social gatherings. These groups are an important part of local life, bringing people together and helping residents build friendships and connections.
Each year we serve thousands of cups of tea and coffee from our community cafe, creating a warm and welcoming space where conversations start and community grows. We also organise community events that bring people together, with over 300 people taking part in celebrations and activities across the year.
By supporting local people, ideas, and organisations, Sea Mills Community Initiatives helps create a stronger, more connected neighbourhood where residents feel welcomed, valued, and able to shape the future of their community.
Our journey
Established in 2009, our journey began when the three local churches in Sea Mills united with a shared vision: to transform a disused bus stop and toilet block into the vibrant and welcoming Café on the Square.
Since then, SMCI has continued to grow as a charity. In 2014, we revitalised an old council allotment site, turning it into a thriving community garden and shared growing space. Over the past few years, we have also taken on the management of the community space within the Methodist building on the Square, providing a hub for activities and events.
Alongside our flagship projects, we run a variety of smaller initiatives that bring people together, including our Community Club coffee morning on Tuesdays, a Friendship Café for women on Wednesday afternoons and annual events such as Apple Day and the Community Christmas celebrations.
Sea Mills Community Initiatives is a charitable company limited by guarantee (charity registration number 1136611). We support and serve those who are vulnerable, either because of age - both young and old - ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage.
